Employment in the EU’s automotive sector

In 2024, the automotive sector in the EU came to the fore in public and policy discussions. The focus was on the slowdown in electric vehicle (EV) sales, rising global competition, belated investments in new technologies, and the potential closure of production lines in Europe.

This is a new sentence added to the original text.

In emphasising the importance of the sector for the EU’s economy, both direct and indirect employment in automotive manufacturing and downstream industries are highlighted: the Draghi report suggests that 13.8 million Europeans, or 6.1% of the total labour force, are employed in the sector at large.
